Ballers and their Cars: El Hadji Diouf Posted: 28 Aug 2012 09:06 AM PDT El Hadji Diouf arrived in England after a very successful World Cup in 2002. His performances in the Far East tempted Liverpool to secure his services, and he’s spent a majority of his time in England since then. Making headlines for the wrong reasons sometimes, Diouf has spent the past ten years of his career between Bolton, Sunderland, Liverpool, Blackburn, Doncaster, Leeds, and even Rangers in Scotland. One thing is certain when it comes to Diouf and that is his love to be seen. Below you’ll see him with his Mercedes SLR McLaren – a rare car with a hefty price tag. His specific car must have started off in the white colorway, but he’s changed things around frequently and even thrown a custom license plate on it that simply says “Fancy.” Below you’ll find his car in white, white and blue, as well as his favorite chrome/mirrored wrap.

Twitter Top Special featuring Joey Barton Posted: 28 Aug 2012 04:58 AM PDT Barton’s latest Twitter monologue started on Sunday evening and lasted nearly an hour. He is currently serving a 12 game ban after his actions against Manchester City and specifically Sergio Aguero in last year’s season finale. Below, I analyze the verbal, well literal meltdown, as it unfolded.
Ferguson bans young Red Devils from ‘Little Red Corvettes’ Posted: 27 Aug 2012 08:52 PM PDT As many of you heard on July 31st, Manchester United signed a seven year shirt sponsorship with Chevrolet. As if the multi-million dollar deal wasn't enough Chevrolet is offering other luxuries, like most automotive sponsorships, the company has offered players a car of choice, just for good measure. Many of the players immediately jumped for the iconic Corvette. But Sir Alex Ferguson, Manchester United's manager, isn't too keen on the entire ordeal. He intervened immediately and laid down his conditions for the players and their choice of car. As was reported by Sportsmail, Ferguson has banned all players under the age of 23 from driving the 'American Made' flashy sports cars. He declared that no young player, regardless of status on the team, will be allowed to drive a car that has not been approved by him. Some of the 'underage' players include: Danny Welbeck (21), Phil Jones (20), Rafael (22) and Chris Smalling (22). Last night a Red Devils spokesperson stated that:
Wonder if this statement came before or after Sir Alex made his stand on the matter? My guess is Chevrolet had no voice against Ferguson's orders. The sponsorship doesn't officially make its debut on the club kits until the 2014-15 season, but that hasn't stopped Chevrolet from branding their logo elsewhere. Old Trafford has already had a face lift on its bench seats; they already showcase the 'Chevrolet Bowtie'.
Ballotelli parties hard…without the ladies Posted: 27 Aug 2012 06:09 PM PDT How unusual is this? Mario Ballotelli is seen out on the town, partying, without a bunch of ladies hanging on each limb. It is very unlike the Manchester City player to be seen off the pitch without beautiful women in tow. However, this was the case Sunday night as Ballotelli hit Manchester's finest nightclub. He was not alone though; a group of teammates joined him for a night of fun at Panacea. Perhaps the absence of multiple scantily clad women is to blame for Ballotelli's grouchy façade. As he is pictured arriving to the club, looking anything but pleased. His orange cap did little to hide his grimace, nor did it disguise him very well. Ballotelli arrived with an entourage of his Manchester City teammates, the likes of: Nigel de Jong, Kolo Toure, Joleon Lescott, Gareth Barry and Joe Hart. Not only were ManCity boys spotted but players from rival Liverpool and Everton were also seen entering the venue. Andy Carroll, striker for Liverpool, came with his friend Joe Hart. The pair had just gone head-to-head that day in a match. Everton players Tim Howard, Sylvain Distin and Marouane Fellaini were also seen entering the club. The wait time to get in was over two hours; fans were lined up for a chance to party with a throng of Premier League stars.

Summer Sellers Stumble in Round One Posted: 27 Aug 2012 05:46 PM PDT Perennial giants Udinese and AC Milan stepped off on the wrong foot as both sides suffered miserable defeats in the first round of Serie A. The Zebrete, who must cope without the summer sales of Mauricio Isla and Kwadwo Asamoah this season, fell 2-1 to new-look Fiorentina. This season could prove to be a tough one for Udinese as losing those two crucial players in the midfield will leave them depleted. Thus far, there have been no key additions that could help the team, and this is the final week of the transfer window. It will be up to Giampiero Pinzi to keep the new midfield in line and to play damage control throughout the year. A little farther north, Milan was dreadful in their opener, losing to promoted side Sampdoria 1-0. Adriano Galliani left his seat with 15 minutes remaining and it is believed that he went to the dressing room to chastise the team. Galliani can’t really be too upset with the players, as they haven’t gotten much help from their management. Massimiliano Allegri does not have much to choose from at center back. Arguably the best option back there, Cristian Zapata, was on the bench and didn’t even play, while Mario Yepes and Daniele Bonera struggled. Ignazio Abate’s absence didn’t help matters either. Milan could use another defender and potentially another midfielder to make this team competitive with the other big sides in Italy. Both selling sides have gotten off to a bad start this year with their opening round losses. There are still four full days to get moves done in order to bolster their squads. Both sides look like they at least need midfielders to be competitive during the upcoming season.

Rooney injury is Welbeck’s chance to shine Posted: 27 Aug 2012 02:34 PM PDT You've seen the pictures, you've heard the reaction; Wayne Rooney will miss the next four weeks. The Red Devils' attacker suffered a horrific gash on his leg in Manchester United's win over Fulham on the weekend. A harsh day for Rooney considering he was only introduced in the latter stages of the fixture. With Rooney out of the picture for the next month or so, you would think this is the ideal time for Robin van Persie to really impress at his new club. However, Danny Welbeck stands to gain far more from his teammate's absence, and will be looking to assert himself among two of the world's leading strikers. At the time of his arrival at Old Trafford, van Persie was one of the most sought-after talents in world football, and for good reason. The Dutchman was coming off of a prolific season that saw him score on 37 occasions for Arsenal. However, there's always that air of doubt that leads one to believe, no matter how good a player is, there is nothing stopping another calamity of Torres or even Andy Carroll proportions. However, RVP managed to get that dreaded first goal out of the way with a delightful half-volley opener against the Cottagers. Step in, Danny Welbeck. At times last season, Welbeck featured out on the wing in more of a provisional role to a more central attacking member of the squad, as was the case on Saturday. The 21-year-old has just signed a four-year contract extension with United, but there's no way that the youngster will want to stay as a second choice. Instead, Welbeck will be hoping to surpass his mentors and become one of the world's best. With Rooney now out of commission for a few weeks, Sir Alex Ferguson is even more likely to throw Welbeck (who has featured in both of United's fixtures so far this season) into the starting fray. Based on pre-season and the 2012-13 campaign so far, it appears that a lone striker is likely to be the tactic of choice for Ferguson. With Shinji Kagawa playing in that space behind the strikers, commonly referred to as "the hole", United would need to sacrifice a player in either central midfield or defense to play with two strikers. That doesn't look to be a likely option for the English giants right now. With Javier Hernandez, the only other realistic striker, vying for a spot amongst the aforementioned trio, Welbeck will fancy his chances of getting the nod as the sole, central option. At 29, Robin van Persie is a more seasoned professional than Welbeck, and Ferguson may feel more comfortable giving him the wider responsibilities. Of course, the Holland international would much rather play the central position and it is where he would be most useful. But isn't that the case for Welbeck too? As was touched upon earlier, RVP has got that first goal out of the way. He can breathe a heavy sigh of relief that the chance of being dubbed a flop has been swatted away…at least for now. So, it's the younger forward, the man quietly training in the shadow of all the superstars, that's currently in the club's limelight and who has the most to gain from Rooney's absence. It's often the case in football that particular players shine brightest when there's little in terms of competition for their place in the line-up. Such was most certainly the case for van Persie during his last Arsenal days and there are countless other stories of the same nature. It's not the ideal scenario for the starlet, but if Danny Welbeck can make it, whilst competing with Robin van Persie and Wayne Rooney for a place in the squad, he will truly be amongst the world's elite, and now is his time to display that kind of pedigree. |
