The Morning After: Apple may have hired a longtime Ford exec for its car project Posted: 04 May 2022 04:13 AM PDT I thought Apple's car project had gone a little quiet, but it's still a thing, according to Bloomberg. The company has reportedly hired a longtime Ford engineer and executive to work on its car thought experiment, once called Project Titan. Desi Ujkashevic had been with the automaker since 1991 and was Ford's global director of automotive safety engineering. Naturally, that means we've chewed over her work history and LinkedIn page, noting she's worked on Ford's electric vehicles and regulatory issues — expertise Apple will love. There have been rumors about Apple's work on autonomous vehicles since 2015, but there have been more setbacks than announcements. Doug Field, who apparently led Project Titan, left Apple to rejoin Ford last September. Are they just swapping execs? — Mat Smith

Ubisoft Montreal takes over work on 'Prince of Persia' remakeThe game was supposed to come out this year, but…Work on Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake hasn't gone as smoothly as Ubisoft hoped. The company has now put its Montreal studio in charge of the project, taking it away from Ubisoft's Pune and Mumbai studios. Ubisoft Montreal was "the very birthplace of the epic Sands of Time trilogy," the developers wrote in a message to fans. The original was released in 2003, which was a reboot of, well, 1989's Prince of Persia. In the original, when you died, you stayed dead. GM's vehicle data might help make roads safer Posted: 04 May 2022 04:00 AM PDT GM is the latest automaker hoping its car data will help governments improve road safety. The company partnering with Inrix on a Safety View cloud initiative that gives crash, vehicle and "vulnerable road user" (think pedestrians and construction workers) data to US transportation officials. If all goes well, local governments can both prioritize new road safety projects and gauge the effectiveness of their current efforts. The data is tailored for the Transportation Department's Safe Streets and Roads for All program, not to mention various agencies' Vision Zero (zero road fatalities or serious injuries) plans. It's no secret why GM and Inrix might want to share car info with the government. The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law includes $5 billion for the DOT's Safe Streets program. That's a lot of potential business from government clients that could be eager to modernize their roadways as much as possible. Whatever the motivation, it might be worthwhile if road safety improves based on real-world data that was previously difficult to obtain. |

Samsung's new phone storage standard is twice as fast Posted: 04 May 2022 03:11 AM PDT Samsung has introduced the latest iteration of its Universal Flash Storage product, which it says is much, much faster than its predecessor. The UFS specification was already developed to enable SSD speeds for cameras, phones and other devices, but this version — called UFS 4.0 — has a speed that reaches 23.2Gbps per lane. That's double the speed of UFS 3.1, the standard used by Samsung's S22 flagship phones. The tech giant says its huge bandwidth makes it perfect for 5G smartphones that typically require huge amounts of data processing. Samsung also expects it to be adopted for use in the automotive industry, as well as for augmented and virtual reality devices. The flash storage features Samsung's 7th-generation V-NAND solution and proprietary controller, and the company says those help it deliver sequential read speeds of up to 4,200MB/s and sequential write speeds of up to 2,800MB/s. It's a lot more power efficient, as well, with a 46 percent improvement over the previous generation that could translate to longer battery life. Samsung's USF 4.0 devices will have max measurements of 11mm x 13mm x 1mm and will come in several capacities up to 1TB. The company will begin mass producing UFS 4.0 storage products in the third quarter of 2022. Right now, Samsung says it's "collaborating with smartphone and consumer device manufacturers globally" and "working vigorously to foster an ecosystem for UFS 4.0 to drive the market for high-performance mobile storage solutions."

AMD teases new 'Dragon Range' CPUs for high-end gaming laptops Posted: 04 May 2022 01:44 AM PDT With the release of its Q1 2022 financial results, AMD also revealed plans for its upcoming Ryzen 7000 Zen 4 series laptop CPUs, as seen in a slide tweeted by former Anandtech editor Dr. Ian Cutress. It's planning to target "extreme gaming laptops" with the new "Dragon Range" series, promising the "highest core, thread and cache ever for a mobile gaming CPU." It also unveiled the Phoenix series for thin and light gaming laptops.
The Dragon Range features a >55 watt TDP and is designed for laptops thicker than 20mm that are largely designed to be used while plugged in, The Verge reported. They'll feature a PCIe 5 architecture and DDR5 RAM, though some models could work with more efficient but lower performing LPDDR5, AMD told Cutress. As with the Ryzen 9 4900HS chip, the Dragon Range will use the "HS" suffix. Despite the relatively high 55 watt TDP, they'll be "notably more power efficient than other laptops in that competing timeframe," according to AMD's technical marketing director, Robert Hallock. Along with the Dragon Range, AMD will launch the Ryzen 7000 Zen 4 "Phoenix" series APUs designed for thin and light laptops under 20mm thick with 35-45 watt TDPs. Those will also use a PCIe 5 architecture, but come primarily with LPDDR5 RAM. As with the Dragon Range, some models could employ DDR5 memory, too. Ryzen 7000 will launch first on desktop later this year with the the Raphael series, replacing the Ryzen 5000 lineup. Those will be the first Zen 4, AM5 platform chips using TSMC's 5-nanometer process node to come to the mainstream market. AMD didn't reveal other details about the Dragon Range and Phoenix laptop chips, but they're expected to launch sometime in 2023. On the earnings side, AMD beat market expectations with revenue at $5.89 billion, a 71 percent boost in sales year-over-year. It also said that starting next quarter, it will break out gaming into a separate financial segment showing sales of chips for consoles (PS5, Xbox Series X, etc.) plus Radeon graphics for PCs as part of a single gaming business, separate from Ryzen chips. The company will explain all that in more detail next month. |
YouTube Go will no longer be available starting this August Posted: 03 May 2022 10:24 PM PDT YouTube Go is going away for good in August. The YouTube Team has announced that it's retiring the lightweight alternative to its main app, mainly because it has become unnecessary over the years. YouTube developed the Go application for users where connectivity is spotty, mobile data prices are prohibitive and low-end phones that couldn't run the main app as well as more expensive devices could were common. The team explained that since Go was first launched in 2016, YouTube has rolled out a number of performance improvements to the main app. Some of those upgrades allow the main app to run more efficiently on entry-level devices and for people with slow networks. The team says it's also working on new controls that would help people lower their mobile data usage if they have limited access to it, though it didn't say when the new feature will be available. It's now advising Go users to download the main application, which unlike the lightweight version allows people to comment, post, create content and use the dark theme. YouTube Go was initially available in India and Indonesia before making its way out of beta and into wide release back in 2017. In 2018, YouTube rolled it out to over 130 countries, so more users can download the 10MB app. Now it's time to bid it farewell. As 9to5Google notes, this raises questions about the need for Android Go in the future. The OS allows cheap phones to run faster, but there may come a time when the main Android platform can run as efficiently on low-end devices. |
Apple store near Baltimore becomes third to start union bid Posted: 03 May 2022 05:01 PM PDT Employees at an Apple store in Towson, Maryland sent a letter to CEO Tim Cook today informing him of their bid to unionize, reportedThe Washington Post. The group, which has deemed itself the Coalition of Organized Retail Employees, or AppleCore for short, represents the third Apple retail outfit reported to be in the the process of unionizing. One Apple store in Atlanta is scheduled to hold a union vote in June, and another location in New York City's Grand Central Terminal is collecting signatures. Earlier this year The Post reported that a number of other Apple stores are quietly exploring a potential union campaign, but have yet to make their efforts public. "As our store approaches its 20th year anniversary we think about the history of this company and how we have always been different; because we have always thought differently. Today we are asking you to do the same and to pledge not to use your resources to engage in an anti-union campaign to dissuade us," AppleCore's members wrote in the letter. Last month, The Vergereported that Apple contracted the major anti-union law firm, Littler Mendelson, which union organizers saw as a likely attempt to nip union efforts in the bud. The Towson group claims to have the support of around 65 percent of eligible workers, giving them a supermajority of the store's employees. A workplace only needs signatures from thirty percent of its employees to hold an NLRB union election, but a majority of workers must support unionization in order for a campaign to be successful. As with the other Apple stores which have gone public with their intentions to unionize, Towson workers cited a lack of flexibility in scheduling, concerns around covid safety as well as stagnating pay. Lagging pay seems particularly rankling, as Apple has posted huge gains over the pandemic, even while the economy at large slumps towards a potential recession. In a statement to The Post, an Apple spokesperson responded to the letter. "We are fortunate to have incredible retail team members and we deeply value everything they bring to Apple. We are pleased to offer very strong compensation and benefits for full-time and part-time employees, including health care, tuition reimbursement, new parental leave, paid family leave, annual stock grants and many other benefits." The Towson store plans to file paperwork later this month with the National Labor Relations Board. Employees at this specific store, located in the Towson Mall, are coordinating with the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, a labor union that mostly represents the aerospace and defense industry. |
Rivian will receive up to $1.5 billion in state incentives to build Georgia production facility Posted: 03 May 2022 03:13 PM PDT Georgia will provide Rivian with up to $1.5 billion in local incentives and tax credits in support of the automaker's plan to build a new manufacturing plant outside of Atlanta. When Rivian announced late last year it would build its second production facility in Georgia, the company said it would eventually employ more than 7,500 workers at the facility and invest a total of $5 billion into the project. According to Reuters, the startup has until 2028 to meet those goals in order to access all the incentives offered by the state's government. The support package is notable for a few reasons. When the company announced the facility, it said it would pay for the expansion with funding it secured from its blockbuster $100 billion IPO. Amazon also has a 20 percent stake in the company, and an order for at least 100,000 electric delivery vans. But despite its strong financial backing, Rivian has struggled to actually deliver cars to customers. At the start of the year, the company delayed the delivery of its 400-mile R1T trucks to 2023. It also announced, and later reversed, a price hike for R1T and R1S pre-orders that led to a shareholder lawsuit. |
Blizzard gives sneak peek of new mobile game ‘Warcraft Arclight Rumble’ Posted: 03 May 2022 12:49 PM PDT Warcraft fans can look forward to a new mobile game in 2022. Blizzard today released the trailer for Warcraft Arclight Rumble, a free-to-play, single-player strategy game that is due later this year. The game features collectible Warcraft Minis that players will be able to control in order to defeat evil leaders in the Warcraft universe. The game's Google Play store description states that players will have the choice of building armies with five playable families: Alliance, Horde, Beast, Undead and Blackrock. Players can opt for single-player mode or going head-to-head in PvP battles. Arclight Rumble will feature multiple modes, including Conquest, Dungeons, Raids and Co-Op. The game features over 60 Warcraft Minis and characters in total, with the ability to unlock new skills and upgrade the characters as you level up. The game's website features even more details on the upcoming title, including the option to pre-register for more details (including the release date, which hasn't been announced yet). With Activision's ongoing workplace sexual harassment lawsuits aside, it's been a mixed couple of years for the Warcraft universe. As PC Gamer notes, the Shadowlands expansion had problems that left some devoted WoW fans in a tizzy. Last month's trailer on the Dragonlandsexpansion let down some fans too. But a new mobile game offers up a fresh opportunity for fans to get excited about Warcraft again with relatively low stakes. You can watch the trailer for Arclight Rumble below: |
Apple Store workers in Atlanta will hold union vote in June Posted: 03 May 2022 12:17 PM PDT Workers at the first US Apple Store to file for a union election will decide whether to unionize next month. According to an agreement obtained by The Verge, employees at Apple's Cumberland Mall retail location in Atlanta will begin voting on June 2nd, with the ballot box open until June 4th. All approximately 100 regular full- and part-time staff at the store will be able to participate in the election. Citing "a source familiar with the situation," The Verge reports Apple wanted the vote held in July. That was a move the Communications Workers of America (CWA), the union that seeks to represent the employees at the Cumberland Mall location, reportedly opposed on account the later date would have afforded Apple more time to attempt to dissuade workers from unionizing. We've reached out to Apple for comment. Apple hasn't explicitly come out against its frontline workers organizing, but those involved in the union drive at the company's Grand Central Terminal location in New York have accused Apple of employing "union-busting" tactics, including messaging that has tried to convince employees that unionization isn't in their best interests. "We are fortunate to have incredible retail team members and we deeply value everything they bring to Apple," the company said when news of the Grand Central Terminal drive first broke. "We are pleased to offer very strong compensation and benefits for full time and part time employees, including health care, tuition reimbursement, new parental leave, paid family leave, annual stock grants and many other benefits." Among other concessions, workers at the Cumberland Mall location hope to push Apple to compensate them better, offer more opportunities for career advancement and build a safer workplace. "One of the biggest things that we're fighting for is going to be for fair pay and a livable wage, because with Atlanta being such a huge city, it's just getting more and more expensive to live here," Elli Daniels, an employee at the store, told Engadget. "Everybody deserves the opportunity to be able to not worry about whether they can afford food or pay their bills. Everybody deserves to be able to afford to live in the city that they work in." Like the recent vote at Amazon's JFK8 warehouse in Staten Island, the Cumberland Mall election could have historic ramifications. If workers vote in favor of organizing with the CWA, it would become the first unionized Apple Store in the US. That's an outcome that could inspire Apple workers at other retail locations. |
Twitter 'Circle' test limits tweets to close friends Posted: 03 May 2022 11:33 AM PDT You might not have to tweet to all your followers (or the public) in the future. Twitter is testing a "Circle" feature that lets you limit tweets to a group of as many as 150 people. It's a not-so-subtle parallel to Instagram's Close Friends — you can ask for advice or share a personal event without unwelcome commentary. The company told Engadget Circle is already available to a "small group" of Android, iOS and web users worldwide. It's not yet clear if or when Twitter might expand the test to a wider audience, although that will likely hinge on feedback. Circle joins a number of features meant to control the reach of Twitter posts, including an option to restrict who can reply. It could help Twitter compete with Instagram and other services that let you be more selective about content sharing, and might help you protect your privacy without resorting to direct messages or a small follower list. At the same time, there is a concern Circle might exacerbate echo chambers. If you frequently limit discussions to a small clique, you might be less inclined to tweet to a larger crowd or see what your more distant connections are saying. Even so, more granularity might be appreciated at a time when it's all too easy to be overwhelmed.

Apple reportedly hired a longtime Ford executive for its car project Posted: 03 May 2022 11:14 AM PDT Apple has hired a longtime Ford engineer and executive to work on its long-gestating car project, according to Bloomberg. Desi Ujkashevic had been with the automaker since 1991. Before leaving the company in March, Ujkashevic was Ford's global director of automotive safety engineering. She previously oversaw the global body engineering team, safety engineering for Ford of Europe and the global design technical operations division. In her early years at Ford, according to her LinkedIn profile, Ujkashevic held roles in vehicle engineering, testing and durability. She has also worked on Ford's electric vehicle efforts and regulatory issues. In other words, she seems like exactly the kind of person you'd want to hire for an EV project. Apple is said to have started work on an autonomous vehicle in 2015. However, those efforts have suffered several setbacks over the years, partly as a result of strategy and staffing changes. Doug Field, who was said to have led Project Titan, left Apple to rejoin Ford last September. However, the reported hire of Ujkashevic is another indication that Apple is still trying to build its own EV. For what it's worth, in a recent LinkedIn post, Ujkashevic said she was "excited to start my next adventure and I hope to continue to contribute to society and advancing technology with a purpose [...] ultimately making a better world!" |
Paramount+ has nearly 40 million subscribers Posted: 03 May 2022 10:54 AM PDT A lot of people are paying for Paramount+ to watch Halo and Star Trek: Picard, even if neither series has been particularly outstanding. On Tuesday, Paramount Global (formerly ViacomCBS) announced that it added 6.8 million new Paramount+ subscribers in the first quarter of 2022. With those additions, the platform has almost 40 million customers. Among other content, the company credited its original programming, including the aforementioned Halo and Star Trek: Picard, for the continued growth of Paramount+. In turn, that subscriber growth contributed to an increase in the company's bottom line, with revenue from the service growing by 148 percent year-on-year to $585 million in Q1 2022. "The first quarter once again demonstrated the power and potential of Paramount's unique assets and the company's continued momentum," said Paramount Global CEO and President Bob Bakish." Paramount's success is particularly notable given Netflix's recent struggles. Last month, the streaming giant announced that it lost about 200,000 customers in the first quarter of 2022, marking its first subscriber drop in a decade. The company has since embarked on a series of cost-cutting measures, canceling series like Space Force and gutting the editorial staff of its Tudum fansite. |
Ubisoft Montreal takes over work on ‘Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake’ Posted: 03 May 2022 09:56 AM PDT Work on Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake evidently hasn't gone as smoothly as Ubisoft hoped. The company has now put its Montreal studio in charge of the project. Ubisoft Pune and Ubisoft Mumbai had been working on the game.
Ubisoft Montreal was "the very birthplace of the epic Sands of Time trilogy," the developers wrote in a message to fans. The original game was released in 2003. The dev team "will now take the time they need to regroup on the scope of the game to deliver you the best experience for this remake of an all-time classic, when it's ready." Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake was delayed from January 2021 to March last year, before it was put on hold indefinitely. As of last June, Ubisoft was targeting a 2022 release window. That seems less likely given the latest update. Engadget has contacted Ubisoft for comment. This is far from the only Ubisoft game to suffer from a protected development cycle. Skull and Bones has been in the works since 2013 and, until alpha test footage leaked last week, Ubisoft hadn't shown much from the often-delayed title since E3 2018. As for Beyond Good and Evil 2, that was first teased in 2008 and officially announced in 2017. That game still does not have a release window. |
Razer's Blade 15 will be the first laptop with a 240Hz OLED screen Posted: 03 May 2022 09:35 AM PDT You normally have to choose between fast refresh rates or OLED's vivid imagery when buying a laptop, but Razer claims it can offer both at once. The company plans to update the Blade 15 with an option for what it says is the first 240Hz OLED laptop display. You'll get the high responsiveness that can provide an edge in multiplayer games, but you'll still have a color-accurate 1440p panel (100 percent of the DCI-P3 space) with deep contrast. If the machine lives up to its billing, you could dominate the latest online shooter in one breath and edit video the next. There will be a few compromises. The 240Hz panel isn't particularly bright at 400 nits. You won't want to work in bright sunlight, then. And while the risk of burn-in that comes with OLED isn't as high as it used to be, this might not be your best choice if you regularly work with static content like photos. And if you thought a 240Hz OLED had to be expensive... you guessed correctly. The Blade 15 with this panel will arrive in the fourth quarter of the year at $3,500. You'll get 32GB of RAM, a 12th-gen Core i9-12900H processor, GeForce RTX 3070 Ti graphics and a 1TB SSD as part of the package, but it's clear Razer is aiming this spec at well-heeled gamers who want a do-it-all screen. Update 5/3/22 11:33PM ET: The processor model was previously listed as i9-12800H. This has since been corrected. |
Google Docs adds new table tools for easier project management Posted: 03 May 2022 09:28 AM PDT Last year, Google announced smart canvas, a suite of tools the company promised would make it easier for people to collaborate across its productivity apps. Since then, it has consistently introduced new "smart chips," small modular features designed to further that goal. The latest adds a new tool for creating dropdown menus in Google Docs. As you can see from the GIF the company shared, you can use the feature to add customizable menus to your document. You're free to decide how many items you want and the title and associated color of each one. Docs even allows you to save a menu as a template for later use. Speaking of templates, Google is adding ones for tables you can use for things like tracking a product roadmap. With today's additions, it's easy to imagine a scenario where you could use Docs as a replacement for a paid project management tool like Asana. "We hope these features help you to create highly customized and organized documents in Google Docs, making it easier to collaborate and drive your project forward," the company said of the new features. Google expects to roll them out to all Workspace and legacy G Suite customers, as well as all personal Google accounts, in the coming weeks. Once you have access, you can add a dropdown menu by selecting the "Dropdown" option from the "Insert" menu. |
Instagram is testing even more recommendations in the main feed Posted: 03 May 2022 09:00 AM PDT Instagram will test some additional changes for the main feed, including more recommendations. Extra content from accounts you don't follow will bubble up in the default algorithmic feed "based on what you love." It's not clear how many of these suggested posts you'll see, though Instagram says the experience will be personalized and factor in things like the number of accounts you follow and how often you use the app. This isn't a massive surprise, given that Instagram has been placing more emphasis on recommendations. Showing photos and videos from people you don't already follow might boost engagement, but Instagram's running the risk of annoying people who want a more curated experience centered around their friends, family and whatever @sainthoax is posting. That said, Instagram is promising to give people more ways of personalizing their experience in the app over time. Two more feeds were introduced to the app in March. The Following view shows posts from the accounts you follow in reverse chronological order. Favorites, meanwhile, allows you to keep closer tabs on up to 50 accounts. You can switch between the feeds by tapping the Instagram icon in the top left corner. Instagram is also testing some tweaks to how posts are displayed in the feed. It says posts will have a "full-screen" appearance. It plans to make videos more prominent too. The new view looks like how Stories are presented, based on an image Instagram shared. The username, profile photo and caption are laid on top of the post, as are the like, comment and share icons. Tabs will still be displayed at the bottom of the screen. Stories will remain at the top of the feed, but as is the case now, these will be hidden after you start scrolling. |
SoundCloud buys an AI music company to help discover hidden gems Posted: 03 May 2022 08:46 AM PDT SoundCloud wants to make it easier to find must-listen tunes buried deep in its catalog. TechCrunchnotes the company has bought Musiio, an AI music curation company. The firm's technology uses AI to "listen" to songs, tag them and slot them into playlists. Ideally, this improves the chances of discovering tracks you like, whether they're from an established artist or a new bedroom DJ. The companies didn't disclose the terms of the deal, but said Musiio would "become core" to SoundCloud's discovery system. Musiio will still offer its technology to other companies. The two haven't revealed their exact plans or an integration timeline. However, it's easy to see advantages for both SoundCloud and listeners. The company could use Musiio's AI to spot a breakthrough artist before a label or rival service poaches them. It might also increase play counts for many songs and convince indie performers to stick around. You, meanwhile, might listen to more varied playlists and discover a breakthrough song before it reaches the charts. |
Spotify's podcast tech chief is leaving the company Posted: 03 May 2022 08:38 AM PDT Anchor co-founder Michael Mignano is leaving Spotify, where he has led the podcast tech team over the last few years. The company told The Verge that Mignano has submitted his resignation and will move on from Spotify at the end of June. Spotify bought Anchor in 2019 for a reported $150 million to help people create, record and manage their own shows. Mignano, who co-founded that company in 2015, started overseeing podcast tech at Spotify as a result. He played a role in Spotify becoming a major player in podcasting and was involved in the company's push into live audio. Around 85 percent of new podcasts on Spotify are uploaded from Anchor. The platform reportedly hosts 4 million podcasts, four times the number it had in 2020. Anchor now even supports video podcasts. Although Spotify is firmly entrenched as a leader in the podcasting space, that side of the business is going through a shakeup. It was reported last month that Courtney Holt — who was involved in the Anchor acquisition and helped sign the Obamas, Joe Rogan and Prince Harry and Meghan Markle to exclusive podcast deals — has stepped down as a Spotify executive but will remain as an advisor. Lydia Polgreen also left her position as managing director of Gimlet Media in April. Barack and Michelle Obama are moving on from Spotify as well. The company says it opted not to offer them a new deal. Their production company, Higher Ground, is looking for a new partner and is said to have been in discussions with the likes of Audible and iHeartMedia. |
Paramount+ debuts in the UK and Ireland on June 22nd Posted: 03 May 2022 07:54 AM PDT ViacomCBS has finally narrowed the timing for some of its international Paramount+ launches. As Varietyreports, Paramount Global announced during an earnings call that the streaming service will arrive in the UK and Ireland on June 22nd. South Korea will also have access sometime in June. You'll have to wait a while longer in other parts of the world, however. Austria, France, Germany, Italy and Switzerland will can start watching in the second half of 2022, while people in India will have to wait until 2023. In the UK, you'll pay £7 per month or £70 per year. Sky Cinema customers will have Paramount+ included at no extra charge. The expansion will be welcome if you've wanted to watch Halo and other shows that have remained exclusive to Paramount+ so far. However, this won't thrill everyone. Until late last year, ViacomCBS made shows like Star Trek: Discovery available outside of Paramount+ coverage areas through rivals like Netflix. You'll now have to subscribe to yet another service to follow affected shows. |
The best travel gear for graduates Posted: 03 May 2022 07:48 AM PDT With summertime right around the corner, you may want to see your new grad off on a trip. After all, your child might have finished school, but that doesn't mean they're done learning. And one of the best ways for them to find out both about themselves and different cultures is to experience a new place first hand. When they're ready, see them off with a few of our travel essentials that will help them stay connected — and have more fun — while on the road. Twelve South PlugBug DuoNone of the gadgets we recommend in this list are of much use if your grad can't charge them when they're away from home. If they own a MacBook, you can save them money and headaches dealing with different electrical standards by getting them an all-in-one charger like PlugBug Duo from Twelve South. It works with all existing MacBook power adapters and comes with five different electrical plugs, providing coverage for Australia, Canada, China, continental Europe, Hong Kong, Japan, New Zealand, Singapore and the US. It also features two built-in USB-A ports, making it possible to charge three devices at the same time. If your grad doesn't need the extra USB-A connections, another option is the $29 World Travel Adapter Kit from Apple. Either way, you're giving them something that will serve them on many trips to come. Buy PlugBug Duo at Amazon - $60Sony WH-1000XM4Crying babies, turbulence and rowdy passengers — there are so many sounds that can make an already trying travel experience even more tiresome. Speaking from experience, comfortable and capable noise-canceling headphones can go a long way toward making all of that easier. Thankfully, you don't have to look far to find the best option in the field: Sony's flagship WH-1000XM4. Outside of masterful noise canceling you can customize to your preferences, the M4 has one feature that makes it especially suited for traveling: You can get up to 30 hours of playtime on a single charge, and another five hours after just 10 minutes of charging. In other words, they'll easily get your adult child through a marathon of flights and layovers. If the $348 M4 are outside of your budget, Sony still sells their excellent predecessor, the WH-1000XM3 for about $249. Buy WH-1000XM4 at Amazon - $348Topo Designs Daypack OriginalThere's no such thing as the perfect backpack, but if there's one that gets close, it's the Daypack Original from Topo Designs. Made in the US with Cordura fabric and YKK zippers, it's built to last. I've had one since 2017 that I've taken on trips to Europe, Hawaii, South Korea, Japan and parts of the mainland US and Canada. I've returned each time without any frayed stitching on my backpack. Topo's trademark classic styling is complemented with details that make it particularly fit for traveling. A 21.6-liter capacity will allow your grad to carry a surprising amount of stuff with them when they land on the ground. Internally, there's a sleeve big enough to accommodate most 15-inch laptops, and high contrast fabric makes it easy to see inside when you need to find a specific item. It also has dedicated pockets for water bottles and plush shoulder straps. If you want to get your new grad a backpack they'll be able to take with them to any workplace, we like the Classic Backpack from Bellroy. It features a 20-liter capacity, a 16-inch laptop sleeve, water-resistant fabric and a chic design that won't stand out when they're wearing professional attire. Buy Topo Designs Daypack at Backcountry - $169Buy Classic Backpack at Bellroy - $179Fujifilm X-E4The Fujifilm X-E4 is the successor to the X-E3, a camera I've packed on every trip I've taken since 2017. What I love about the X-E3 is its unimposing exterior and size. It strikes the perfect balance between portability and image quality. The X-E4 makes an already ideal travel camera even better by adding a tilting 3-inch LCD touchscreen, USB-C connectivity and Fujifilm's latest 26.1-megapixel X-Trans 4 CMOS sensor. Oh, and did I mention it's the company's smallest interchangeable lens camera and weighs less than a pound? Add to that Fujifilm's film simulations and Bluetooth connectivity, and you have a camera that will allow your kid to take great photos and easily transfer them to their phone to share over social media. What's more, you can buy the X-E4 with a 27mm prime lens. Don't judge this lens by its small size, though: It's sharp across its entire aperture range and has a field of view that will make composing shots easy. It's worth noting Fujifilm has one of the best and most comprehensive lens ecosystems of any camera manufacturer. For almost every expensive piece of glass like the 56mm f/1.2, the company offers a more affordable f/2 alternative that is light, compact and weather sealed. That makes the X-E4 the perfect starter camera. Buy Fujifilm X-E4 at B&H - $1,049Amazon Kindle PaperwhiteEvery trip involves some amount of downtime. Between long flights and train rides, as well as lengthy layovers, there are plenty of opportunities to do some reading and last-minute research. For that reason, an e-reader like the Kindle Paperwhite is the perfect travel companion. Not only is the Paperwhite the weight and size of a small paperback, but even the 8GB model can hold thousands of books and it now has an adjustable warm light, too. If the trip your grad plans to take involves the beach, the latest version is waterproof as well. Best of all, with the Paperwhite's battery good for up to six weeks on a single charge, there's one less cable and charger for them to carry on their trip. Buy Kindle Paperwhite at Amazon - $140GoPro Hero10 BlackYou'll notice there's more than one photography-related item on this list. The reason for that is that no one camera is perfect for every task. The X-E4 I just mentioned is great for stills, but if your grad is on the more adventurous side, an action camera like the GoPro Hero 10 Black will be a better fit. While GoPro didn't give this model a huge overhaul compared to the previous, the new GP2 processor makes a huge difference when it comes to image quality, interface speed and general performance. It also has a bunch of new slow-mo and frame rate options that will give your grad more ways to line up the perfect shot. Buy GoPro Hero 10 Black at Amazon - $500Peak Design Tech PouchPeak Design is known for making some of the most practical camera bags and accessories you can buy. But over the last few years, it has also made a name for itself in the travel bag space. If you want to help your grad organize all their cables and gadgets before they leave for their next trip, look no further than the company's Tech Pouch. It has a handful of nifty features that separate it from the competition. Exterior handles make it easy to open and hold the pouch, even on a plane flying through turbulence. Meanwhile, inside you'll find loops and Peak's signature origami dividers there to make it easy to organize things like pens, SD cards and batteries. Another handy detail is a cable passthrough that allows you to keep a power bank within its interior and connect it to your phone in the front pocket. Oh, and the nylon exterior is water-resistant, so your grad can relax knowing all their electronics are secure from any accidental water damage. Buy Tech Pouch at Peak Design - $60Mophie Powerstation XXLAt some point during their trip, the battery on your grad's phone is likely to run low or even die at a critical moment. It could happen when they're trying to navigate a complex subway, for example. That's a stressful moment, especially if you're in a place where you don't speak the language. Help them avoid situations like that with a power bank. There are a lot of capable models out there, but we like the ones Mophie makes. Specifically, the Powerstation PD XXL with its 20,000mAh cell, 18W PD fast charging, and a mix of USB-A and USB-C ports. It will allow your grad to quickly charge three devices simultaneously, so that they can easily avoid that dreaded moment when their lifeline to the internet dies. Buy Powerstation PD XXL at Mophie - $70MiiR Insulated bottleI never leave my house, let alone travel anywhere, without a water bottle. There are so many reasons to bring one with you on a trip, not the least of which is that you'll avoid needing to buy any plastic ones. Seattle-based MiiR makes some of the best reusable bottles in the business, with one of my favorites being the company's 23-ounce, insulated, narrow-mouth style. It's perfect for travel because it can keep liquids either hot or cold for long periods of time, and it won't sweat or transfer any flavors to a drink thanks to the medical-grade stainless steel that coats its interior. It also looks great and comes in a variety of vibrant colors, so there should be one that will appeal to your grad. Buy MiiR bottle at Amazon - $30Manta Sleep MaskBetween flying and the eventual jet lag that sets in after hopping countries and continents, getting a full night's sleep can be a challenge. That's where a sleep mask can help and one I've found to be better than the rest is made by a company called Manta. At this point, it makes a lot of different models, so take a look at their website to find the one that will best suit your kid. That said, the original Sleep model is a best place to start. What makes it stand out is that the eyecups aren't sewn into the mask. Instead, they're attached to it using velcro, allowing you to reposition them to make the mask as comfortable as possible. The company says they're also 100 percent effective at blocking out any light, a claim I've found to be accurate. While we're on the subject of masks, why not also get your grad some extra face ones? After all, even if they're vaccinated, you'll want the peace of mind that they're taking care of both their own personal safety and that of the people around them. Buy Manta sleep mask at Amazon - $35DJI OM5If your grad has a relatively recent phone like the iPhone 13 or Galaxy S22, they don't need a dedicated camera to take great-looking video during their trip. But what can help is a smartphone gimbal like the OM5 from DJI. Making some of the best commercial drones in the world, DJI knows a thing or two about camera stabilization. The OM5 will help your grad film smooth and cinematic footage while they're on their trip. The latest gimbal has a magnetic mechanism that makes attaching your phone to the gimbal much easier than a traditional clamp mount, plus it weighs 100 grams less than the previous model. Samsung's 2022 Frame TVs get their first discount at Amazon Posted: 03 May 2022 07:14 AM PDT If you've been coveting Samsung's 2022 The Frame TV lineup but felt the asking prices were a tad steep, you'll want to take notice — Amazon has put the art-centric 4K sets on sale for the first time. The 55-inch model is the best deal of the bunch, selling for $1,298 ($200 off). The 65-inch version is also a better bargain at $1,759 (down from $1,997). The 43-inch set has dipped to $879 (normally $997) if you want a smaller model for the bedroom, while the wall-filling 75-inch panel has received a $200 discount to $2,797. Buy Samsung 2022 The Frame TV at Amazon - starting at $879The 2022 version of The Frame is, arguably, the one that fulfills Samsung's vision of an art-focused TV that blends into your home decor. Its namesake customizable frame is more welcoming than the usual plastic or metal, but the centerpiece is a matte-finish display that reduces glare and helps digital paintings stand out. This is a set you'll want to leave on around the clock, if just to bring some Van Gogh or Vermeer into your living room. There are some compromises. This is a QLED screen, so you won't have the extra-deep contrast of OLED or mini-LED. You'll also need a subscription to the Art Store if you want full access to Samsung's virtual gallery. All the same, The Frame is easy to justify if you're tired of your TV being an imposing slab of technology when it's not in use. Marshall debuts the Willen, its first ultra-compact Bluetooth speaker Posted: 03 May 2022 07:00 AM PDT Marshall has just announced two new Bluetooth options to its stable of portable speakers, along with a few new features. The Willen is the company's first ultra-compact portable and it's joined by the Emberton II, which improves on the previous model in a few ways. Both will now work with the Marshall Bluetooth app, which hasn't been available on any of the portable speaker models before. It was also inevitable that the company would launch a feature called Stack Mode – a throwback reference to "Marshall stacks". This simply catches them up with the rest of the speaker world and lets you wirelessly expand your music to other Willen or Emberton II speakers. Also worth noting is that Marshall has increased the battery life of the Emberton II from 20 hours of runtime to 30 or more on a single charge (at modest volumes I'm sure). As we alluded to in our recent portable Bluetooth speaker buyer's guide, Marshall speakers (in general) have a wonderful warm sound, chunky bass and dynamic highs. We found the best value in both sound and price when you opt for the larger and relatively less portable Tufton model ($450). Although still priced at a slight premium, the smaller models have a scaled down version of the same sound. Now that the Emberton II supports Stack Mode, 30 or more hours of runtime and offers an app for EQ tweaks and firmware updates, there's more value tucked into that price tag. The Willen fills the gap for people looking to get a personal portable and save a few bucks, although we still have yet to give it a listen. Both speakers have Bluetooth 5.1, an IP67 weather-proof rating and are compatible with each other for Stack mode, which takes a triple press of the Bluetooth button to host and a double press on secondary speakers to join or disconnect. Both are available for pre-order today with the ultra-compact Willen priced at $120 and the Emberton II for $170. |
'FIFA 22' cross-play test is coming to PS5, Xbox Series X/S and Stadia Posted: 03 May 2022 06:15 AM PDT Your pool of potential FIFA 22 rivals will soon extend beyond your platform of choice. 9to5Googlenotes EA has confirmed plans for a FIFA 22 cross-play test on PlayStation 5, Stadia and Xbox Series X/S. Once the test is available, you can opt in to play against a wider range of gamers in Online Seasons and Online Friendlies. You'll have to add buddies to the in-game friends list if you want them to join in, but there otherwise won't be any associated headaches. EA didn't say just when the test would launch, or when it might become a regular feature of the game. The publisher is expecting feedback in its community forum when the test launches, however. The test will no doubt frustrate you if you're an PS4 or Xbox One owner. All the same, this may be one of the more influential cross-play additions in recent memory. The FIFA series remains one of the most popular sports games worldwide, and that has typically made your choice of console important — you didn't want to get an Xbox if all your friends would play the latest FIFA title on PlayStations. Cross-play support will let virtual soccer fans use the platform they want without fear of being cut off from their social circles. |
The best gaming gear for graduates Posted: 03 May 2022 06:15 AM PDT Just because they're out of college doesn't mean that the grads in your life won't have time for gaming – it's a great way to blow off steam after a hard day at work, or after a particularly grueling job search. But now that they're older they could definitely up their accessories game a bit, so we've rounded up some of our favorite gaming items that will upgrade their experience, and a few hot titles that will give them plenty to do this and talk about this summer. 8BitDo Pro 2Your grad is fully out in the adult world now, so they really deserve a pro-level controller for their gaming activities — particularly one that's flexible for all their needs, be it mobile or console gaming. 8BitDo makes a number of great solutions, but the one that we'd recommend above all else is the Pro 2. This PlayStation-styled controller is super comfortable to hold, pairs easily via Bluetooth and is compatible with a wide range of devices, from Windows and macOS machines to Android devices to the Nintendo Switch. If your grad is a tinkerer, the Pro 2 will even work with the Raspberry Pi. This is truly the Swiss Army knife of game controllers. Buy 8BitDo Pro 2 at Amazon - $50Logitech G435A headset is a must-have if you want the best game audio, but being tethered to a computer or console is not so much fun. Neither is the selection of colors available for most headsets, unless you're a big fan of red and black all the time. Luckily, Logitech has this stylish wireless headset for around $80. The G435 connects to a computer via a Logitech Lightspeed dongle so your gamer won't have to worry about Bluetooth lag or an unreliable connection. As for looks, it comes in cheery colors like blue or lilac, and the padded ear cups and headband will keep a head cool while not mussing up their hair. Buy Logitech G435 at Amazon - $80Elgato Stream Deck MiniIf your grad is thinking about a career in streaming, they're going to need the proper equipment to get started. It's best to start out small, and the Stream Deck Mini is a nice, affordable way to dip their toe in the water. The Deck's six buttons give budding streamers one-touch access to popular functions like lighting, audio and emotes. And it's super easy to set up — just drop and drag in the software. Becoming a famous streamer can be a lot of work, and the Stream Deck just makes it a bit easier to handle. Buy Stream Deck Mini at Amazon - $80Logitech Litra GlowAnother key item to a successful streaming career is the lighting. After all, someone can't be an on-camera personality if you can't see them on camera. But ring lights can be expensive, unwieldy or just hard to set up. Logitech makes all those problems go away with its Litra Glow streaming light. This compact light can clip on the top of a laptop for on-the-go streaming while also providing soft all-over illumination — no telltale rings in your grad's eyes when they stream. Buy Litra Glow at Amazon - $60Timbuk2 CS03 Crossbody SlingNo more classes means your grad can slim down in the backpack department. But if they're a gamer they're still going to need something with lots of pockets to store cables and cards. Gaming accessory maker SteelSeries and shoulder bag company Timbuk2 have collaborated on a pair of bags made for the gaming lifestyle, and the smaller CS03 is perfect for carrying around a Nintendo Switch, headphones and other mobile gaming accessories. This crossbody bag may remind you of a fanny pack, but it has way more pockets for cords and game cards, and a padded lining to keep delicate LCD screens safe from scratches. Buy Timbuk2 CS03 crossbody at Amazon - $80SteelSeries Rival 5 Gaming MouseGaming mice are great for a lot more than just gaming — they're great for school and work, so if your grad doesn't already have one, why not upgrade them to the versatile Rival 5? Its curved shape feels great in the hand and the customizable lighting isn't too flashy so it works for both home and office. Players will appreciate the array of nine programmable buttons that fit all genres of gaming, including popular titles like Fortnite and Genshin Impact to deeper strategy experiences like the Civilization series. Buy Rival 5 mouse at Amazon - $60Razer Huntsman MiniYour gamer shouldn't have to settle for the keyboard that came with their laptop. They shouldn't have to settle for anything less than a premium mechanical keyboard, and you don't have to break the bank to get them one. The Huntsman Mini is a small 60 percent deck with optical switches. That's not word salad – this just means it's a smaller keyboard without a number pad or arrows, and it uses lasers under each key for a super fast response time. It's a great keyboard to have in a gaming arsenal for travel purposes, but it's good enough that gamers might make it a full-time accessory. Buy Huntsman Mini at Amazon - $120Video gamesPokémon Arceus LegendsWith the school year over and done with, grads have a bit of time on their hands, so why not give them a game to kick back and relax with when they're not searching for a job? Players who grew up with the Pokémon franchise will appreciate this fresh take on the world, with action-oriented gameplay and a storyline that takes place in the distant past of the Sinnoh region from Pokémon Diamond and Pearl. Even if they haven't played a Pokémon game before, Legends can make a good entry point to the franchise that will get them ready for this fall's new generation of creatures in Scarlet and Violet. Buy Pokémon Arceus Legends at Amazon - $60Kirby and the Forgotten LandKirby titles have gotten a lot easier over the years, but Kirby and the Forgotten Land is a game for the old-school gamers who like more of a challenge. This epic title has Kirby exploring a post-apocalyptic world, battling enemies and gaining new abilities. If your grad has ever wondered if Kirby could eat a car, this is the Switch game to get them. Fans are even calling it the best Kirby game since the '90s, so it's sure to keep your loved one busy over the summer. Buy Kirby and the Forgotten Land at Amazon - $60Elden RingYour grad has probably been super busy this year so far, studying for finals and getting ready for graduation. So it's likely they haven't dipped their toe into the massive, immersive experience that is Elden Ring. This epic title can be brutally difficult with a big learning curve, which makes it less for casual gamers than for those players who have a lot of time on their hands… like someone just out of school. Soon enough they'll be slammed with job offers, so give them this soon-to-be-classic while they can fully enjoy it. Buy Elden Ring at Amazon - $60
