Gareth Bale enacted a ten-minute turnover that saw Wales go from bottom of the pile and back into Group A contention. The match signaled the first Welsh victory with Chris Coleman at the helm of the nation and will undoubtedly buoy the Dragons on their quest for 2014 World Cup qualification.
Craig Levein’s side looked set to take all three points away from the Cardiff City Stadium after James Morrison latched onto a Steven Fletcher flick in the first half. However, poor defense from the visitors meant that the result was lost at the last minute, putting an end to the Scots’ unbeaten run so far in this competition.
Wales’ equalizer came after Shaun Maloney was beaten for speed in the area by the hosts’ talismanic Bale, who obliged by firing home from 12 yards. The Tottenham winger has drawn a large amount of criticism as of late due to some alleged diving exploits, but simulation was far from an issue on this occasion.

It didn’t end there though, and like the phoenix rises from the ashes, the Dragons showed their fiery tempers thanks to a 25-yard marvel courtesy of that man, Gareth Bale. Despite his nation’s small stature on the world stage, Bale’s performance seldom dips and the speedster was once again on hand to play hero, getting Wales campaign for Rio back on track.
That being said, the two home nations are a millions miles from making the cut in Group A as the likes of Croatia, Belgium and Serbia remain locked for the two possible qualification places.
After drawing their first two Group A fixtures, the game in the Welsh capital was Scotland’s first loss in the 2014 World Cup pool.
The match did have its positives for the traveling fans though, and showcased the returns of two Fletchers. Darren came back from a 12-month chronic bowel illness to feature for the Scots once more, whereas Steven Fletcher resolved a two-year dispute with Craig Levein to come back into the fold.
It remains debatable as to whether either of these sides will genuinely challenge to make it through to Rio, but Coleman’s first win as Wales boss certainly eases the pressure that was accumulating on the manager’s shoulders.
The road to Rio, however, is a long one indeed and nobody will be taking anything for granted in these early group encounters.
