The city of Seattle hosts some of the most passionate fans of any city in the United States. The Seahawks of the NFL boast the loudest stadium in the league, causing havoc and wreaking mayhem among teams who try to audible at the line of scrimmage, causing unnecessary timeouts and letting the momentum of the game shift into Seattleâs favor.
The soccer-half of the city is not to be outdone, however, as they currently hold the MLS record for attendance to one league game in a soccer-dedicated stadium. That game was a memorable affair from October 15th, 2011, as 64,140 people packed into the stadium to see off a United States legend, as he bowed out from the sport to pursue a career in broadcasting.
The upcoming game this weekend could prove to be an even bigger match though.
Seattle have already clinched their playoff spot for the MLS Cup with their draw against Cascadia Cup third-wheel, Vancouver. Portland currently lead the Cascadia cup standings, with eight points in four matches to Seattleâs six points in five. So, a win would greatly go in favor of the hosts, as they would go top of the table and with the help of their Sounders Army, they could do just that.
66,000 of the most mental Sounders fans are predicted to show up and raise their scarves up in their air to give that oh-so-crucial 12th man boost to their side against their rivals to the south. If the gate prediction numbers are surpassed, it will be the craziest, most hectic atmosphere domestic American soccer has seen since the time of Pele, the Cosmos and the original NASL, when the New York Cosmos drew in 77,691 to display their 8-3 thrashing of the Fort Lauderdale Strikers on August 4th, 1977.
