Manchester United manger Sir Alex Ferguson is believed to be considering making a major change in his tactical approach to the clubâs UEFA Champions League clash with Portuguese side Braga in this weekâs group stage continuation. According to quotes from Fergusonâs press conference from the Daily Mirror on Oct. 22, 2012 the Scottish leader is ready to make some tweaks to get the best out of his side.
During his 40 years of management, Sir Alex has always kept wingers and wide players in his traditional style of tactical play. However, after so many successful seasons with that approach the type of players emerging in his club could make things finally change.
Since the arrival of Shinji Kagawa to the club this summer and the rising star of Tom Cleverly continuing to blossom, Ferguson is pondering the change to a diamond midfielder according to his comments, thus eliminating the traditional 4-4-2 formation of his past that included two designated wide players:
If it turns out we play the diamond consistently, it would be revolutionary because it is going against our history,â said Ferguson. While his success in the past would suggest the, âif it ainât broke donât fix itâ approach, there is never not a time where a little risk could pay off in big rewards. After all it is football that we are talking about and things can change in an instant and seasons can be made or broken within the flash of an eye.
But the level of the game in England and Europe now is so high that making yourself unpredictable is going to be a strength.
Teams will have to think if we are going to use two out wide or the diamond, because we have players capable of doing both things.
Kagawa and Cleverley can play really well in the type of game that a diamond offers, whilst in Nani, Ashley Young and Antonio Valencia we have very good wide players.
If there is any manager in the English Premier League that has proven he can build new teams into success time and time again it is Sir Alex Ferguson, and while he is not likely to completely change his philosophy, a little trial and error for the legendary leader appears a likely change of pace.
