Liverpool have only won two for 13 homes matches at Anfield so far this calendar year. The once mighty fortress of the Reds is in danger of being labeled a non-factor in matches after it failing to have the awestruck affect on the opposition for the last few seasons.
Brendan Rodgers continues to have the faith and support of the Liverpool board and ownership as well as the fans, but a loss to a club such as Reading at home could cause major issues for the manager.
Reading was the first managerial adventure of Rodgers years ago, and he was not afforded the kind of time or faith that he has seen at Anfield so far. However, his friend and former colleague Brian McDormott, whom has taken the reigns for the Madjeski stadium club, managed his first victory for the Royals against Liverpool back in 2010.
The Reds not only have a massive weight on their shoulders to win at home, but they also have the frustration of their first team having been drastically depleted in the attacking department thanks to the recent injury to summer signing, Fabio Borini who will now be out for three months.
Luis Suarez will be the lone man up front once more in the clubâs 4-3-3 / 4-2-3-1 formation and he is likely to be surrounded by youthful exuberance and the veteran support of captain Steven Gerrard and calming presence of Joe Allen amongst the midfield.
Jonjo Shelvey is likely to make his return to the first team after serving the three match ban he was awarded during the Northwest Derby against Manchester United four weeks ago.
Reading are not just seeking an away win, but the first win of their English Premier League return. So far things are not looking great for the Royals this season despite a massive outlay for new players by their Russian owner.
Pavel Pogrebnyak has only managed two goals for the club after being bought due to all the promise the showed for Fulham under Martin Jol in the second half of last season. The Royals are expected to line-up in a traditional English 4-4-2 formation, and will hope to stifle a potentially fatigued Suarez up front for the length of the match with no one to come in and relieve him.
